So does google.

got it. clear.

>> What about my and everyone else's rights who are trying to access valid legitimate content?

you are in bad state. Hope you will get your video back soon.

Yeah, right. Lets just throw out all the sharp knives from our house because we can cut our hands with it. I know there is pirate content, I know there is lots of it. But there are legit content too, lots of it. There are some really good games (free games) which are distributed through bittorrent sites. I think there are some web series distributed that way too. So are you saying they are pirates too? You are throwing a general umbrella ban and calling them collateral damage. Torrent is a wonderful technology, its beautiful feat of engineering. Banning its use because you feel uncomfortable and cannot fix your own pricing/distribution issues is nonsensical. Also, except for thepriatebay there is no other website which would not take down illicit content on request. It actually just takes an email from an official with a list of links and bam!! they are banned. Its that simple.

I am most outraged by their ban of vimeo.com, it is a beautiful host of almost all good conference videos. It is also very self regulating just to maintain their quality. Are you telling me you can find any pirate content on it?

And I find pastebin's ban hysterical. Seriously, its just a text sharing site. What are they going to do their? Share the script of the film? Geez.

And above all, these bans are non effective and can be easily circumvented by just changing DNS servers.

You know, there are many who suggest this work flow: 1/ generate passwd, 2/ login using the tmp passwd, 3/ login session valid for 15 days, 4/ regenerate passwd on 16th day.

No need to remember passwds, store them or think much about them. Someone wants to give this approach a try?

First of all, I think it's pretty cool that you're taking a stab at this problem. I haven't seen this approach before and I think it takes a lot of courage to even try this with real customers. Kudos on that.

Having said that, the core problem is bad passwords. I don't think that more passwords is an appropriate solution. As it stands, having too many passwords is already a significant problem. I routinely forget passwords and the only way I log in to a handful of services today is with the "forgot password" link.

Here's another way to look at this -- passwords are the problem. Make them go away. Why not just offload authentication altogether? Between Google, Facebook and Twitter I'd guess a pretty good chunk of your users would have an account somewhere. Just let me log in with one of those accounts instead.

Of course, we can worry about weak passwords there too, but if you really think about it the only password that really matters is the one to your email account. If I can get that, I'm just a "forgot password" link away from signing in to pretty much everything.

Since I am also studying ML, I can tell you my experience. If you are good in maths thats great else study Statistics and Linear Algebra (OCW/Harvard video lectures is great). For ML Andrew Ng's or Yasir Mustafa's video lectures are awesome. ML notes on Andrew Ng's website is a good resource. I am still studying all this stuff and find them useful. Thankfully my Prof's have helping me as well. But I would say maths is important for appreciating how things work. PCI is quick start guide to ML -it gives code examples, but you won't get why things work the way they are.

Umm.. do you know Prateek's startup SupportBee had their demo video hosted on vimeo? I have run into at least 2 other videos since the morning which I needed to see but are blocked. All of them conference videos. What about my and everyone else's rights who are trying to access valid legitimate content?

And you know what? All the pirate sites are still accessible on https. It is Vimeo which didn't carry any pirated content that is effectively banned.

> the good amount of original content which you said is very very less

Nobody denies that. The ideal way to deal with it would be to send those sites takedown notices (http://vimeo.com/dmca). Also, TPB does not host any content. It does not host the torrent files either.

> for downloading linux, i would go to respective linux os website and download there.

I said some rare distros. There are many distros which do not have their own torrent trackers. Also, some old version of popular distributions have a decent number of seeders on TPB.

> btw, I am not citing BS reasons here. i am just telling the fact.

I never said that you cited BS reasons. This is what I said "but blocking sites citing BS reasons ain't any better". You didn't block any site, right? :-)

Maybe I didn't make my self abundantly clear. So here I go again. I was referring to the reasons cited by court, ministry, Kapil Sibbal etc, for taking down the sites.

thanks for judging my IQ.

i agree that there are lot of talented people. have you recognized them first?

No country in the world is without censorship. one or the other do censor something.

In India, there is a body which asks film producers cut the film scenes if its bad. its decided by only a group of people.

i am not supporting such things. but that is happening.

if one gets blocked, something or the other will come up for sure. anything that comes out with a purpose and does a good thing, i support that. i am not talking about torrent sites or video sites.

Agree.

the good amount of original content which you said is very very less. for downloading linux, i would go to respective linux os website and download there. its much more better than that.

Regarding pirated content, go and check every torrent & video sites. almost 90%+ should be pirated only.

its up to you whether to take it or not.

btw, I am not citing BS reasons here. i am just telling the fact.

Thanks for the info folks. I was curious as to whether anyone has set up as an LLP and then taken angel or VC investment, Form what I read about LLP's, its really cumbersome to do so.

Thank you for looking at my profile. What would you recommend? I am decent at programming and have a fair bit of mathematical background.

I also have Tom Mitchell's book but I found PCI a bit easier to get into.

Do it in Mahatma Gandhi's style or Bhagat Singh's style. Some people have already started protesting in Bhagat Singh's style.

There are lot of open problems in ML to be done. This is a vast field. Checked your githib profile. If you are new to ML, PCI is not a great way to learn about ML.

> I don't think I have that talent.

Sure you do! It is something you can learn like most other stuff. Persistence is the key. In case you are interested, I can help you prepare your biz case from scratch. It will be totally your baby. No strings attached. My email is in my profile if you want to get in touch.

Thank you for the advice. The problem is that I am really bad at non technical things like planning or coming up with an idea (not to imply that I am good at technical things) so I believe I would work better where I was given a technical problem to solve.

I do admire the people who have the talent to think of an idea and bring it to fruition but I don't think I have that talent.

While I agree with you completely and I think OP is dead wrong, there is something to be said for keeping the discourse civil.

Noted. https on passwd pages is WIP and standard. But site-wide is a surely a challenge.

Sorry to say but we here are not restricted to the content that those big production houses produce and sell. If you really do have an IQ above 80 you might have known that, but certainly you do not belong there, you are satisfied with the dumb/mediocre content of the mainstream. You should get into your mind that there are a lot of talented people out there who need such mediums to share and be recognized.

I am horrified of your mentality when you combine and say 'torrent sites and video sites'.

Your first fail is lack of https. Worry about double passwords, etc. after you have rolled out site-wide https. That, in itself, is a decent challenge at scale.

You can reach out to Praveen from Startbiz praveenbiz14 at gmail dot com. I've used them and they are pretty good

I'm not for / against the Congress Party.

They happen to be the current incumbent and they're impinging web freedom on multiple counts, not just his particular case.
